Winter and Parry Sound Bikes

Winter activities:

Parry Sound is the perfect year round outdoor playground, featuring stunning road, gravel and mountain bike riding during the summer months. During the cooler months there are still plenty of fun outdoor activities. Georgian Nordic has well groomed trails for fatbiking, classic skiing and skate skiing, and town walking trails become beautiful fat bike trails.

Nordic Skiing:

There are two types of nordic skiing, the first is the traditional classic cross country method and the second being skate skiing. Parry Sound has excellent cross country ski trails especially for classic skiing. Located 10 minutes north of Parry Sound, Georgian Nordic provides 50km of groomed trails for skiing, biking and hiking.

Classic:

A classic cross country ski is designed with a grip zone in the center of the ski and glide zones on both ends of the ski. The skier puts their weight into the grip zone to generate power, kicks back and uses the glide to get speed and distance. A grip zone can be created with wax, crown scaled pattern or mohair skin.

Skin Ski:

A skin ski integrates mohair into the base of the ski creating a grip zone. This is a low maintenance solution to get a strong grip and smooth glide.

Crown ski:

The crown ski uses a textured pattern resembling scales carved into the bottom of the ski to create a grip section. It is designed to be smooth in one direction (for optimal glide) and catch the snow when moving in the other direction to create grip. This is an extremely low maintenance ski requiring no adjustment to the grip zone.

Wax Ski:

A wax ski involves using wax and a cork to build your ideal grip. Many racers and competitive skiers prefer a wax ski however there is much more maintenance required. With a wax based ski you have the ability to adjust your grip specifically to the snow temperature and condition. You are in control of your ski experience, creating the ideal grip to glide ratio. A wax grip zone will require reapplications throughout your ski session. Applying too much, or too little wax, or the wrong type all together, will dramatically affect your ability to grip and glide.

Putting grip wax into your ski can be annoying and tedious especially in the cold, this is why many recreational skiers prefer a waxless ski.

Backcountry Skiing:

Backcountry skis are wider than your typical cross country ski, use a crown grip zone, and in some cases have metal edges. These skis are great for skiing in fields, ungroomed trails and on lakes.

Skate Skiing:

This style of skiing resembles ice skating but on skis. Skate skiing is faster but more technical; and lots of FUN! Skate skiing requires the skier to push and glide. Skate skis are shorter, use longer poles and boots with stronger ankle support.

We carry all styles of cross country skis at Parry Sound Bikes. We have wax and waxless skis in all forms; race, recreational, backcountry and junior. Skis are measured by lengths specifically correlated to skier weight and height. Visit us in store, call or email for answers to all of your cross country skiing questions.

Fat Biking

Fat bikes are bikes designed for winter trail riding. A fat bike has large wide tires and are occasionally studded for extra traction in deep snow or ice. Fat biking is a popular outdoor activity here in Parry Sound. Fat biking can be done on the local walking trails in town, on the Georgian Nordic trails and occasionally conditions allow for riding on the lakes for a magical experience. Shop fat bikes here:
